How We Work

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) enables congregations and partners of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic event. PDA is the emergency and refugee program of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. 

PDA responds to natural and human-caused disasters around the world by providing immediate and long-term support. We empower communities to take ownership of their response to the disaster by offering trainings and guidance, financial support, capacity-building and more. In the U.S., we work through mid councils; internationally, we partner with grassroots, community-led organizations, Presbyterian partners or members of ACT Alliance.

PDA is committed to long-term accompaniment and response, often recognized for being one of the last organizations to leave a disaster-impacted area. Our dedication to long-term recovery, emotional and spiritual care, and volunteer host sites distinguishes us from other disaster-response organizations.

In addition, PDA leads the refugee response ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). We support mid councils and congregations with referrals, resources, consultations and grants as they support migrants in their communities. Outside the U.S., PDA supports refugees through regional and ecumenical partners following the same protocol that guides other disaster-response efforts.

PDA also houses a story ministry, Counter Stories Productions (CSP). PDA recognizes the value and importance of amplifying voices and stories. Using film as a resource to increase awareness on social justice issues, CSP seeks to connect and equip communities while cultivating wider circles of engagement. CSP documentary resources include films on gun violence, environmental racism, eviction and homelessness, immigration detention, refugee resettlement and more.

PDA has two sources of funding: a portion of the One Great Hour of Sharing offering and donations designated to PDA.
