National Disasters

As part of our Christian witness, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) responds to disasters that lead to suffering and loss in communities throughout the nation.

Through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), the PC(USA) works with mid councils and churches to provide immediate support after natural disasters, such as hurricanes and wildfires, and human-caused disasters, such as mass shootings and environmental calamities. PDA also assists with long-term recovery efforts, connecting mid councils and churches with resources (including grants and educational materials) to help them rebound and thrive.

Volunteers are crucial to these recovery efforts, whether responding to immediate needs or praying with people who’ve lost loved ones or sustained property damage. We believe in the importance of providing “a ministry of presence,” showing up to help our neighbors feel loved and supported during times of crisis. We also recognize the power of partnerships, working with groups vital to putting communities on the path to full, sustainable recovery.

We work to educate mid councils and churches about the risks of climate change, which has contributed to more intense weather-related events, heightening the need to plan ahead to protect churches, communities, individuals, and families.
