About PC(USA)

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s partner in Togo is the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Togo, the largest Protestant denomination in this small country of 6 million people. World Mission has been working with the church to develop and support partnerships that will work to address Critical Global Initiatives in evangelism and addressing global poverty.

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Togo was founded by German missionaries in 1847. During the first World War, under the influence of Scottish missionaries, the church organized itself into an independent Presbyterian denomination. It maintains close ties with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana, having been founded by the same German mission agency. The church is committed to social justice, holistic evangelism, education, community development, the empowerment of women, and the embrace of traditional African music and culture in its worship and theology. For many years, the denomination remained in the south of the country, since the government actively discouraged evangelism in the north of Togo. Over the past decade, a more open political climate has brought new opportunities to reach the 60% of the Togolese population that is not Christian, and to mission and ministry beyond its borders into other Francophone West African nations.
