Guide to the American Waldensian Society Records
Open for research.
The Waldensians emerged as a reform movement within the Catholic Church in Lyon, France in the late twelfth century CE. As a result of persecution by the Catholic Church, Waldensians became isolated primarily in the Waldensian Valleys of the Cottian Alps, near the border between Italy and France; Torre Pellice emerged as their capital. They claim to be the earliest Protestant denomination. In 1848, Waldensians received full Italian citizenship, including the right to own property outside of the Valleys, though by the early twentieth century, most of the approximately 25,000 Waldensians in Italy were still poor farmers.
In the late nineteenth century local societies were created in the United States to assist the Waldensians. The American Waldensian Aid Society (renamed the American Waldensian Society in 1984) was founded in 1906 in New York City as the first national and interdenominational society formed to assist the Waldensians. As stated in its certification of incorporation, its goal was to raise funds for “evangelistic, institutional, and educational work.” Over the years, the AWS has supported Waldensian churches, clergy, building projects, and organizations such as orphanages, hospitals, and the Waldensian Theological Seminary (Facolta Valdese di Teologia).
The 1910s and 1920s were a period of rapid growth and intense activity, coinciding with a time of heavy Italian immigration to the United States; support for Italian immigrants was a major focus. Branches of the AWS were created in cities throughout the United States, though by the end of the 1980s all the branches had closed. During World War II, the AWS was cut off from direct contact with Italy, and many branches discontinued their work due to the demands of the war. The post-WWII years were marked by raising special funds to rebuild the Waldensian church in Milan, to support the Waldensian Theological Seminary, and to assist in building the Agape Ecumenical Center. As Waldensian churches and communities in northern Italy became for the most part self-supporting by the 1950s, the focus of the AWS shifted to include assisting Protestant churches in Southern Italy and Sicily, supporting evangelical efforts within predominantly Roman Catholic Italy, and assisting immigrants to Italy.
In 1975, the Waldensian Church joined the Italian Methodist Church to form the Union of Methodist and Waldensian Churches, which today has 50,000 members worldwide, in Italy, Uruguay, and Argentina. The AWS continues to support the Union of Methodist and Waldensian Churches and its projects. Waldensian immigrants to the United States assimilated into other Protestant denominations. In Valdese, North Carolina, Waldensians joined the Presbyterian Church but they still celebrate their heritage with an annual pageant and a museum dedicated to the history of the Waldensians.
Series I, 1904-1996, consists of annual reports, financial records, and meeting minutes for the board of directors, the executive board, and annual meetings. It is divided into three subseries. Subseries 1, 1904-1996, contains annual reports, financial records, and meeting minutes bound together. Subseries 2, 1923-1995, contains unbound minutes, annual reports and financial records. Subseries 3, 1928-1982, contains bound finance reports, including accountant reports and treasurer reports. Subseries 1 also contains the certificate of incorporation and the by-laws of the AWS. The first three volumes in Series I are fragile.
Series II, 1853-2005, consists of the newsletters and publications of the AWS, organized chronologically, bound, and intermingled with related promotional material aimed at AWS members with the purpose of raising funds. In 1927, the annual report ceased to be produced and the newsletter became the primary means of recording and communicating the AWS’s activities. The series includes informational pamphlets and leaflets on the Waldensians, their history and contemporary situation, and on the AWS’s activities. The series also includes manuscripts and correspondence relating to the publication of the English translation of You Are My Witnesses: The Waldensians Across 800 Years by Giorgio Tourn. The 19th century pamphlets in Series II are fragile.
Series III, Executive Correspondence, is the largest series, and is divided into five subseries. It contains correspondence, with material related to the correspondence, from the office of the chief executive of the AWS. Over time, the title for this office changed from General Secretary to Executive Secretary to Executive Director. The subject of the correspondence encompasses the routine business of the chief executive of the AWS, which includes: arranging international visits (service visits, visits by notables to other countries, and sponsored tours to Italy), financial matters, publications about the Waldensians, specific projects of the AWS, and involvement with larger organizations such as the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the United Church of Christ. Much of the correspondence is international, reflecting the AWS’s ties abroad, primarily with Italian Waldensians (known as the Tavola Valdese) but also with Waldensians in Uruguay and Argentina (known as the Mesa Valdense). Important correspondents include leaders of the Italian Waldensians, such as Giorgio Bouchard, Giuseppe Platone, Franco Giampiccola, and Gianni Rostan. Other notable correspondents include Tullio Vinay and J. Alberto Soggin. The bulk of Series III is in English, with a sizable minority of items in Italian, and some items in French and Spanish.
Subseries 1, 1911-1982, is made up of correspondence and material related to the correspondence spanning the tenure of several chief executives: Iris Frampton, Genevieve Lowry, Arthur B. Wiles, and Harold B. Noyes. It is arranged alphabetically, with material generally arranged chronologically within the folders.
Subseries 2, 1915-1980, consists of correspondence and financial records detailing the donation of money to the Waldensian Church in Italy to support various charitable endeavors, including orphanages, a home for the elderly, food and clothing donations to the needy, and the Agape Ecumenical Center. It is arranged chronologically.
Subseries 3, 1952-1977, contains materials relating to Italian visits to the United States. The visitors were either Waldensian pastors or the Moderator of the Waldensian Church. The subseries mainly consists of correspondence organizing these visits, but also contains itineraries, publicity material, and expenses. The Moderators include Achille Deodato, Ermanno Rostan, Neri Giampiccoli, and Aldo Sbaffi. This subseries is arranged chronologically.
Subseries 4, 1966-1984, consists of correspondence and subject files from the office of Charles W. Arbuthnot, Jr., Executive Director from 1974 to 1982. This subseries is arranged alphabetically.
Subseries 5, 1906-1996, contains correspondence belonging to the tenure of Frank G. Gibson, Executive Director from 1983 to 1996. It is arranged in rough chronological order. Maintaining its original order, it is sometimes foldered according to correspondent, sometimes according to subject, and sometimes according to whether it is international or domestic correspondence. Material is arranged chronologically within folders.
Series IV, Branch Records and Correspondence, 1906-1986, contains records from the various branches of the AWS across the United States and Canada. The bulk of the records are administrative in nature, including minutes, reports, and statement receipts of financial contributions to the main branch. Clippings and scrapbooks are also present for certain branches. This series is arranged alphabetically by city.
Series V, 1914-1930, is a very small series, containing photographs from a trip to Italy undertaken by Gilbert Colgate and his wife in 1914, a portrait of Gilbert Colgate, and a photo album documenting the relationship between Englantine Coucourde, a Waldensian, and Mr. and Mrs. Whitford, who supported her education.
