Paul Shields Crane was born in Oxford, Mississippi, on May 2, 1919. As an infant, he was brought to Korea by his Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS) missionary parents, John Curtis Crane and Florence Hedleston Crane, and was raised in Japanese-occupied Korea. Returning to the United States to complete his secondary education, he graduated from Davidson College in 1941 and from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1944.
In 1942, Paul Crane married Sophie Earle Montgomery in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born in Nanking, China, on May 29, 1918, to PCUS missionaries James Nelson Montgomery and Aurie Hollingsworth Lancaster Montgomery. Raised in China and Korea, she returned to the United States and graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1940.
As medical missionaries to the Korea Mission under the auspices of the Executive Committee of Foreign Missions and (after 1949) the Board of World Missions of the PCUS, Paul and Sophie Crane served in Korea from 1947 to 1969. At Chunju (now Chonju), Korea, they established a hospital, medical training program, and nursing school, and helped raise significant funds for a needed expansion of the facility. Paul Crane was particularly interested in two medical conditions that afflicted the Korean people: parasites and leprosy. To combat parasites, Crane launched an education program and traveled the countryside educating people on sanitation and how to properly dispose of food and human waste. Crane's leprosy patients benefited from his ability as a surgeon. He performed hundreds of reconstructive hand surgeries on patients with deformities as a result of leprosy.
The Cranes returned to the United States in 1969 and resigned from active service in 1970. Paul Crane remained active in medicine, overseas medical assistance projects, and the PCUS and its successor denomination the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). From his election in May 1979 until his resignation in October 1983, he served on the General Assembly Mission Board (GAMB), and was assigned to the Division of International Mission (DIM) to provide guidance and counsel to staff. While serving on the GAMB, he was a member of the 1980 Asia survey trip/DIM and the 1981 China travel team, and visited Japan and Korea in 1982. At the October 1983 meeting of the DIM, Paul and Sophie Crane were recognized for their years of service to the GAMB, as they prepared to undertake new responsibilities for the DIM serving as specialists in mission. From July 1984 through December 1987, Paul and Sophie Crane worked as specialists in mission for the PC(USA) GAMB Division of International Mission in Atlanta, Georgia. During his service with the DIM, Paul Crane visited numerous countries worldwide to learn about, advise, and raise support for medical programs. In 1985, the Cranes traveled to twenty countries in Africa and Asia where they visited Presbyterian medical facilities and hospitals. Their work for the DIM concluded on December 31, 1987, when it ceased to exist as an entity.
The Presbyterian Border Ministry, a ministry on the U.S.-Mexico border, was started in 1984 through a joint venture between the PC(USA) and the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico. In December 1986, the Presbyterian Border Ministry Corporation was formed as the ministry's trustees in charge of fundraising and fiscal oversight. Paul Crane was one of the nine PC(USA) representatives on the corporation's board, served as secretary until his term ended in late 1987, and was made an honorary staff member of the corporation by the board in April 1988. He continued to help in fundraising projects and interpretation of the Presbyterian Border Ministry when called upon.
Sophie Crane assisted Paul Crane in the research and writing of many of his books. In 1998, she authored her own work, A Legacy Remembered: A Century of Medical Missions, that documents the worldwide medical mission of the PCUS from 1881 to 1983.
The Cranes had five children. Paul Crane died on June 12, 2005 in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Sophie Crane died on May 5, 2013.
The Paul S. Crane and Sophie Crane Papers, 1867-1999, include subject files, slides and reports, research files, photograph albums and photographs, certificates, and other materials related to the work of the Cranes. The collection provides insight into the history of Presbyterian medical missions in the twentieth century. A small amount of the material in the collection pertains to the Crane family.
The collection is arranged into five series: Paul S. Crane, M.D., 1948-1989, bulk 1980-1989; Sophie Crane research files for A Legacy Remembered: A Century of Medical Missions, 1867-1998; Photograph albums and photographs, 1924-1960s, 1985-1986, 1999; Audio-visual materials, 1988, 1998-1999; and Certificates and other papers, 1897-1929, 1940s-1985, 1995-1998.
The Paul S. Crane, M.D. series is divided into two subseries: Subject files, 1973-1989; and Slides and reports, 1948-1988, bulk 1980-1988. The first subseries consists of subject files that include reports, minutes, agendas, correspondence, travel records, memoranda, printed matter, clippings, and ephemera primarily documenting Paul Crane's travels for the GAMB Division of International Mission. A portion of the materials are predominantly administrative in nature. Also included are several Presbyterian Border Ministry subject files from 1985 to 1989 that document the border ministry, the Presbyterian Border Ministry Corporation, and Paul Crane. Crane's personal reflections on and reactions to these travels can be found (along with photographic slides visually documenting the trips) in the "Slides and reports" subseries. Subject files are arranged chronologically by year.
The second subseries contains photographic slides and reports that primarily chronicle Paul Crane's travels to international Presbyterian medical mission stations during the 1970s and 1980s. A small amount of the material relates to Crane's earlier work at the Presbyterian Medical Center/Jesus Hospital (PMC) in Chonju, Korea, and to family vacations or unidentified events. The bulk of the material documents the Presbyterian Church's late twentieth century medical missionary endeavors. Crane's reports include information about the geography and culture of the countries he visited; details about the operation of the medical mission stations in each country; and Crane's own reflections on the trips, the medical work, and the countries themselves. Crane's photographic slides depict medical workers, patients, hospital buildings, and the landscapes of the surrounding cities and/or rural areas; these images provide important context for Crane's words. This subseries is arranged chronologically.
The Sophie Crane research files contain interviews, personnel data, biographical information, printed matter, clippings, photographs, and letters that Crane used while writing her 1998 book, A Legacy Remembered: A Century of Medical Missions. While most of the materials are not unique to this collection, they provide researchers with an assemblage of materials that document the history of PCUS medical missions. Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically by country.
The third series includes eleven photograph albums and photographic prints. Five of the ten albums relating to Korea document the Presbyterian Medical Center during the 1950s and 1964. The 1980s and undated photographs grouped by country probably relate to the slides in the second subseries. Also included is PCUS medical missionary Margaret Lapsley Liston's album relating to the PCUS American Presbyterian Congo Mission (APCM), 1924-circa 1961. Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically by type.
Audio and visual materials consist of three VHS tapes and an undated slideshow presentation with accompanying audio cassette recording. The 1988 Mission Yearbook for Prayer and Study video, "The Leaven in the Loaf," documents the border ministry conducted by Presbyterians in the United States and Mexico. Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically.
The fifth series includes certificates, newspaper clippings, printed matter, letters, and ephemera. The 1960s certificates (in English and Korean) were presented to the Cranes during their missionary service in Korea. A small portion of the materials relate to the Crane family. Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically.
