Biographical Note / Administrative History

Biographical Note

William Alfred Ross was born in Greenville, Tennessee, on July 19, 1873. He enrolled at the University of Arkansas in 1893 but had to drop out during his first year. He returned in 1895 and completed his studies in 1898. Ross entered Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, in 1900 and received his B.D. in 1903.

Soon after completing his seminary studies, he began working as a home missionary for the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS) Washburn Presbytery while living in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was ordained in 1904 and continued his home mission work until 1906. In December 1906, William Ross wed Lorena Jane Barry of Oxford, Mississippi.

In 1907, the PCUS appointed Ross to serve as a missionary in Mexico where he joined his brother and fellow PCUS missionary, Hervey L. Ross. William worked in San Angel, Toluca, Mexico City, Coyoacán, and Cuernavaca. In the early 1920s, Ross became president of the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Mexico (Seminario Teológico Presbiteriano de México), a position he held until his retirement in 1946. Lorena Ross died in Sept. 1937, and in 1946, Ross wed Helen Camp Matthews. They retired to Montreat, North Carolina, where they lived until William Ross’s death on February 21, 1960.

After retiring, Ross consolidated many of his notes, lectures, and teaching materials into publishable works. He had already published Sunrise in Aztec Land in 1922 and The Historical Reality of Jesus in 1940. He continued to work on his manuscripts, almost exclusively in Spanish, and had many of them published in the 1950s. Among these was Estudios en las Sagradas Escrituras as well as other Bible commentaries and theological works.

Collection Overview

The William A. Ross Papers document Ross’s work as a missionary and president of the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Mexico; his writings on theology, the work of the Presbyterian Church in Mexico, and the archaeology and history of Mexico; his preaching; and the genealogy of the Ross and Wilson families. The collection is divided into eleven series. Some folders contain notes, possibly by his niece Isabel Ross (daughter of Hervey L. Ross), identifying an individual or explaining context and content.

The Manuscripts series is the largest and consists almost exclusively of theological works written in Spanish. These have been divided into subseries: Old Testament, New Testament, and General. Few of the manuscripts are complete, but most comprise large sections of various works.

The Notes series covers a wide range of topics. Some note pages appear to have been used for lectures; others simply as space for Ross to record his thoughts on a given topic. Most are in English, and several provide insight into Ross’s thoughts on Mexico and missionary activities. Materials in the Lectures series deal primarily with the Bible. There are collections of lectures, among them “Los Profetas Menores” and “Introduccion al Estudio de las Sagradas Escrituras,” that almost certainly originated at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Mexico. Many of the lectures are in Spanish, but there are two, “Beauty” and an address at Friendship Presbyterian Church, Black Mountain, N.C., that are in English.

The series documenting the PCUS Mexico Mission dates from 1912 to 1953 and includes minutes, clippings, histories, and correspondence. Included are letters commenting on the influence of Carl McIntire’s Bible Presbyterian Church in Mexico and letters from Ross’s brother, Hervey L. Ross.

The separate Correspondence series, 1897-1960, includes personal and family correspondence, letters concerning Ross’s publications, and Missionary Correspondence Department (MCD) letters. In addition, there are letters from the “Hippocack Club” whose members were all missionary children with the exception of Ross, who was designated “King Longnose.”

The Trip to Holy Land series consists of materials that document Ross’s trip to Europe and the Holy Land in 1930 and 1931. Items include a journal, notes, correspondence, and several photographs and postcards. The collection also includes sermons, most in English and written in 1949; biographical and genealogical information on Ross and his family; and several of Ross’s published works.
