Biographical Note / Administrative History

Biographical Note

Henry Hayes Sweets was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, on October 6, 1872. He attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia for one year before transferring to Central University in Danville, KY, in 1891. Sweets graduated with a B.A. degree in 1894, earned his bachelor of divinity in 1898 from Louisville Theological Seminary, and was ordained in 1898 by Louisville Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS). He received a doctor of divinity degree from Central University in 1909.

During his time in school, Sweets served as the student pastor for the Reservoir Avenue Mission, which later became James Lees Memorial Presbyterian Church in Louisville, KY. Upon his ordination in 1898, Sweets became pastor of the church and served there until he was called by the General Assembly of the PCUS in May 1904 as the new executive secretary of the Executive Committee of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief. Sweets was based in Louisville but traveled across the southern United States in support of Christian education. In 1925 and 1926, he also spent eight months in China, Korea, and Japan studying the methods of education implemented by the PCUS missions in those countries. He authored a number of books and articles on Christian education including Source Book on Spiritual Life and Evangelism (1945); Source Book on Christian Education (1943); The Church and Education (1939); and Planning the Good Life (1934). He contributed articles to The Earnest Worker and The Christian Observer.

Sweets’s tenure with the Executive Committee of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief also saw an expansion of ministerial relief in the PCUS. First organized in 1861, the Ministerial Relief Fund provided financial assistance to elderly ministers and families of deceased ministers. Sweets developed a plan to increase the amount of the fund’s endowment by requiring ministers and churches to contribute a percentage of the ministers’ annual income to the fund. Upon retirement, ministers would then collect what they had contributed. The newly-named Ministers’ Annuity Fund began operation on April 1, 1940.

Sweets served as moderator of the PCUS General Assembly in 1935, and acted as moderator in 1936 when the elected moderator, Dr. P.F. Price, could not complete his term. Sweets was also actively involved in the formation of the PCUS Woman’s Auxiliary in 1912.

Sweets served as executive secretary of the Executive Committee of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief until his official retirement in 1943, and remained active in the committee’s work until 1948. After his retirement, Sweets also served as a supply minister to a number of PCUS churches.

Henry Hayes Sweets married Douschka Martin of Newbury, SC, on November 27, 1907. They had three children: Henry Hayes Sweets, Jr., Douschka Sweets Ackerman, and Martin Sweets. Henry Sweets died February 25, 1952, at his home in Louisville, KY at the age of 78.

Collection Overview

This collection documents the personal and professional life of Henry Hayes Sweets. The general correspondence series, 1892-1952, includes letters written to and by Sweets to families he met through his work as executive secretary of the Executive Committee of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief; correspondence with fellow ministers in the PCUS including Walter L. Lingle, Charles W. Dabney, Thomas E. Converse, Edward O. Guerrant, and William Dobyn; and correspondence with various women who were active within the PCUS including Hallie Winsborough, Janie McGaughey, May Dixon Thacker, and Margaret Lane a.k.a. Mildred Welch. A significant amount of correspondence pertains to the books written by Sweets, including Source Book on Christian Education, Planning the Good Life, and The Church and Education, and books that Sweets advised his fellow ministers on, specifically William Dobyn’s manuscript, The Book in the Light of Its Being, and James Vance’s work On Being a Preacher. The bulk of the family correspondence in the collection, 1884-1952, consists of letters to and from Sweets’s wife, mother, and children. There are also letters of condolence regarding the death of Sweets. Several folders containing genealogical information about the Sweets family can be found in box 11. A few financial and legal documents, clippings, and pamphlets are included in this series.

The Sermons series contains sermons written by Sweets primarily during his time as pastor of the James Lees Memorial Presbyterian Church (1898-1904) and delivered throughout his career until his death in 1952. A small number of sermons were written by Sweets during his time as executive secretary of the Executive Committee of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief. Included in this series is the moderator’s sermon he delivered at the 1936 General Assembly in Augusta, Georgia, and news clippings, church bulletins, and pamphlets that Sweets kept with his sermon files. A significant number of sermons were photocopied during the processing of the collection due to the deterioration of the paper and an infestation of mold.

The Executive Committee of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief series includes correspondence, reports, surveys, statistics, clippings, pamphlets, and minutes. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject or type of record. Significant subjects in this series include Ministers’ Annuity Fund; surveys of the history of education throughout the PCUS synods; surveys of the educational load by synod; history of Presbyterian institutions; field reports for the National Secretaries Conference held in Lake Placid, NY, Sept. 1924; report on the Christian Education Movement - Advisory Committee & Colleges, 1941-1942; and reports for the meeting of the Permanent Committee on the Minister and His Work, Jan. 31, 1952. This series also includes records relating to Sweets’s retirement from the committee including three volumes of “Messages of Appreciation” presented to Sweets at the 1940 General Assembly upon his retirement.

The Foreign Mission series relates to Sweets’s eight-month trip to Korea, China, and Japan during 1925 and 1926. Consisting of correspondence, clippings, journals, pamphlets, and maps, the records document Sweets’s study of the PCUS educational institutions in those countries. There is a significant amount of correspondence between Sweets and his family, Harry W. Myers, and J. Leighton Stuart.

The James Lees Memorial Presbyterian Church series, 1897-1950, pertains to Sweets’s involvement with the Reservoir Avenue Mission, later the James Lees Memorial Presbyterian Church. Much of the series documents Sweets’s years as pastor of the church, but there are a few records on the 50th anniversary of the church. The series includes correspondence with Mrs. James Lees and Lucy Vaughan, clippings, pamphlets, journals, kindergarten vaccination records, financial records, and membership lists.

Sweets’s writings are documented in the form of notes, reviews of works, proofs, and copies of articles, clippings, books, and addresses. Covering a broad range of topics, especially Christian education and ministerial relief, the Writings series includes copies of his Source Book on Spiritual Life and Evangelism; Source Book for Ministers on Christian Education as Related to the Colleges and Theological Seminaries of the Church; The Church and Education; and Planning the Good Life. The series is arranged alphabetically by title of work or type of record.

The Subject Files series includes clippings, articles, pamphlets, and notes gathered by Sweets. Topics include the Women’s National Sabbath Alliance, the YMCA, and Christian education. The Miscellaneous series consists of various items, both personal and professional, that Sweets collected during his life. Professional papers include date books; address books; certificates of membership in several organizations including the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Church U.S.; news clippings about Sweets; scrapbooks; church bulletins from churches Sweets preached at over the years; and handwritten notes of ministerial services performed, including baptisms, marriages, and funerals. Personal papers include notebooks from Sweets’s time at Louisville Theological Seminary; commencement programs and report cards from Central University and Hampden-Sidney College; marriage certificate and wedding invitation for Henry and Douschka; and a handwritten biography of Sweets’s life. This series also includes a few oversized materials. The records are arranged alphabetically by topic, except for the scrapbooks and oversized materials which are housed in separate boxes.

Other materials in the collection include a series of sermons of Thomas Wylie Sloan written between 1903 and 1943. The Oversized Materials series consists of larger items from the collection including posters, a map, certificates, and diplomas. Finally, there is a series of personal and professional photographs taken throughout Sweets’s life. There are family and vacation photographs, photos taken in Swannanoa and Montreat, N.C.; professional portraits taken of Sweets; photographs of fellow ministers in the PCUS; a photograph of the 1905 General Assembly; a portrait of Margaret Lane, an author who wrote numerous articles about the Ministers’ Annuity Fund; and unidentified photographs of men, women, and children. A large number of the photographs are undated. The Photographs series is arranged into four sub-series: negatives; personal photographs; portraits of Sweets; and professional photographs.
