Guide to the Stanley Armstrong Hunter Papers

Doctor Hunter was born near Toronto, Canada, in 1888. His father was the pastor of the Erskine Presbyterian Church of Toronto. After the removal of his father to Denver, Colorado, he attended the West Denver High School for four years, graduating in 1905. He was graduated for Princeton in 1910 in the last decade under Woodrow Wilson's presidency. He departed at once for Allahabad, India, where for two years he taught in the Allahabad Christian College (now Ewing Christian College). He returned to America and attended Union Theological Seminary and graduating in 1916, having previously received the degree of Master of Arts from Columbia University. Occidental College, Los Angeles, conferred an honorary doctorate in divinity upon him in 1925. Doctor Hunter served as assistant pastor in the Central Presbyterian Church in New York City, and in the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. In Pittsburgh for seven years he was pastor of the historic North Presbyterian Church and for a time associate editor of the Presbyterian Banner. He served as pastor of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, CA from 1924-1954 and then interim pastor until 1955 at Centennial Presbyterian in Oakland, CA. He retired in 1957 and died two years later.
This collection consists of the writings and correspondence of Stanley Hunter during the first 40 years of his life, especially during his time as a missionary to India. Another portion of the collection is dedicated to memoriums and reports of Arthur Ewing.
