Ernest D. Mathews was born in Kentucky. He attended Maryville College and Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, graduating in 1943. In 1938 he married Eula Ethel Sibey. They were appointed to the Mexico Mission in 1943, immediately transferred to the Guatemala Mission for a year, and reappointed to Mexico in 1945. Mr. Mathews took part in a translation of the New Testament into the Mayan language and he and his wife headed an evangelistic outreach program, largely in Mayan. They also taught at the Rural Presbyterian Seminary in Merida. The Mathews retired from missionary service in 1978.
This is a miscellaneous collection of correspondence, reports, mission letters and actions, and materials from the mission schools. There are also some materials on the Mexican Presbyterian Church.
