Azel Roe graduated from Princeton College in 1756. In 1763 he was called to the Presbyterian Church in Woodbridge, NJ, where he remained pastor for over fifty years. From 1778 to 1807 he served as a trustee of Princeton, and in 1802 he was elected Moderator of the General Assembly. He died in 1815.
