Guide to the David Reed Gordon Papers
Open for research.
David Reed Gordon was the son of Dr. Andrew Gordon, founder of the Sialkot Mission (United Presbyterian Church of North America). David Gordon studied at Monmouth College and Xenia Theological Seminary. In 1895, he and his bride Grace Williamson sailed for northern India as newly appointed missionaries of the UPCNA Board of Foreign Missions.
The Gordons spent their first thirty-six years of service in the district of Gurdaspur in the Punjab Mission. Dr. Gordon's evangelistic work took him all over his district.
After a 1930 furlough, the Gordons returned to India. By this time Dr. Gordon's health was too frail to permit him to continue as an itinerant evangelist. He and his wife settled in Rawalpindi, where he became superintendent of the leper asylum. Grace Gordon died in 1936; Dr. Gordon retired from missionary service at that time, returning to the United States. He died in Duarte, California.
The collection consists of David R. Gordon's "The Milne Memorial Mission School, Dhariwal" manuscript booklet for 1927 with photographs and letter from Gordon, 1928; Gordon's "The Milne Memorial Mission School, Dhariwal" manuscript booklet for 1928 with photographs, 1929?; Gordon's 1931 letter concerning a booklet; and two typescript copies of Gordon's "Historical Statement of the Synod of the Panjab [Punjab] for the 75th Anniversary of the United Presbyterian Church, 1933."
