Guide to the Harriet Stroh Papers

Harriet Stroh was appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions to the China Mission in 1919. Her responsibilities included teaching at the Girls' School in Hwaiyuan (1920-1927, 1933-1937) and at the North China American School (1927-1928). She performed evangelistic work at Paotingfu (1928-1929), Hwaiyuan (1929-1931) and Showchow (1935-1936; and engaged in refugee work at Hwaiyuan during the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1939). She resigned from mission work in 1942.
Record Group 187 consists of Harriet Stroh's correspondence, reports, photographs and other miscellaneous items, 1919-1970, though the bulk of the collection dates from 1918-1939. The outgoing correspondence is primarily to members of her family and constitutes the bulk of her correspondence. Especially valuable is the correspondence (both incoming and outgoing) during the Sino-Japanese War and the subsequent Japanese occupation. The photographs, though mostly unidentified, reflect her missionary service in China primarily at Hwaiyuan and Showchow.
