Guide to the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America Division of Home Missions Records
Open for research.
The Division of Home Missions, established in 1950, was the successor to the activities of the Home Missions Council of North America. The Division was organized for "conference, consultation, coordination of denominational home mission work, and cooperative action and work." The primary concerns of the Division were "problems of city churches, town and country churches; ministry to special population groups and areas; church extension and new church development; and consideration of strategy and method for an adequate ministry to the entire population."
The Division of Home Missions worked through a number of departments and committees. The departments included Church Building and Architecture, Indian Work, Migrant Work, Town and Country Church, and the Urban Church. The committees included Alaska, Christian Approach to the Jews, Defense Communities, Home Missions Institutions, Missionary Personnel, Promotion and Publicity, Sharecropper Work, West Indies, and Youth and Student Work.
Edith E. Lowry and I. George Nace were co-executive secretaries of the Division from 1950 to 1958. Jon L. Regier was executive secretary from 1959 to 1964.
In 1965 the Division of Home Missions was merged with the Division of Christian Life and Work to form the new Division of Christian Life and Mission.
The papers of the Division of Home Missions are organized in four main parts — General Files, Departmental Files, Publications, and Addenda. Records of the various committees of the Division are found in the General Files. The material from the departments varies greatly in quantity and quality. There is very little material from the Department of Church Building and Architecture, as opposed to the extensive files of the Department of Migrant Work. There is also little material found in the files for the period 1959 to 1964.
The files of the Department of Migrant Work, directed by Edith E. Lowry, include correspondence and reports from some thirty state programs, human interest stories, family case stories, and articles by summer volunteers. There is material concerning the importation of foreign workers under Public Law 78. Additional files concerning migrant work are found in the Addenda.
The Department of Indian Work was closely involved with various American Indian organizations. The Departments of Town and Country Church and the Urban Church engaged in a number of research projects. The Publications part contains files of the magazines, City Church and Town and Country Church. A file of the National Fellowship of Indian Workers News Letter (Nos. 1 - 61) is found with the bound volumes
The archives of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America were processed in 1980-1984 through two grants awarded to the Presbyterian Historical Society by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Work under the first grant was performed by Dr. Alan Thomson and under the second grant by Donald L. Haggerty.
The archives of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America have been dated from 1950 to 1972; however, there is material dating from before and after this time period. Documents from the predecessor organizations date from as early as 1839. There is also a small amount of material found in the files from as late as 1975. The year 1972 was selected as a cutoff date for the archives because of the major reorganization which the NCC underwent at this time. The archives are arranged in the following record groups:
