Honduras
The Honduras Presbyterian Church/Misión Evangélica Presbiteriana de Honduras was formed in the 1960s by Guatemalan Presbyterian immigrants and began growing in the 1980s and 1990s through Guatemalan mission efforts and later through partnership with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) via Tampa Bay Presbytery. The denomination now numbers more than thirty congregations, mainly in remote, rural areas. It is said, “Presbyterians go where no one else wants to go.” PC(USA presence in Honduras dates to the 1990s, with mission coworker partnership in the Christian Commission for Development and later Heifer International. In 2009, mission coworkers were sent to work with the Honduras Presbyterian Church to facilitate partnerships and later to work in theological education and pastoral formation. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the Presbyterian Hunger Program have also provided seed grants and emergency funding to ecumenical organizations in Honduras, including the Mennonite Commission for Social Action and ECORÉ, a group that works with communities struggling for food sovereignty and environmental justice.
About our work
Dori Hjalmarson
Dori accompanies, coordinates and coaches lay and pastoral leaders of the Presbyterian Church of Honduras as they broaden theological education and strengthen the church’s leadership capacity. One component of this is a dynamic program in collaboration with the Latin American Biblical University (UBL) of Costa Rica offering an intensive two-year theological education program for pastoral and lay leadership.
She serves as the primary Presbyterian World Mission liaison to the Honduras Mission Network, facilitating connections between World Mission, the network, the Presbyterian Church of Honduras, and other interested parties. One focus of Dori’s collaboration with the Presbyterian Church of Honduras is facilitating partnerships between Honduran and U.S. Presbyterians. Joseph Russ
Joseph will minister with and support the Calvinist Reform Church in El Salvador and their education and development agency, Alfalit, while strengthening a network of partners working on migration issues in the Northern Triangle. Based on the experiences of migrants and local partners themselves, U.S. individuals, congregations, presbyteries and mid councils can join them in solidarity and advocate for policies that support migrants and prevent forced migration. Together, all of us can help people who want to stay in their homes stay, and welcome those who need to migrate. Read more about Joseph's ministry on his profile page, which you can find here.
