¹   The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice;
          let the many coastlands be glad!
²   Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
          righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
³   Fire goes before him,
          and consumes his adversaries on every side.
⁴   His lightnings light up the world;
          the earth sees and trembles.
⁵   The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
          before the Lord of all the earth.

⁶   The heavens proclaim his righteousness;
          and all the peoples behold his glory.
⁷   All worshipers of images are put to shame,
          those who make their boast in worthless idols;
          all gods bow down before him.
⁸   Zion hears and is glad,
          and the towns of Judah rejoice,
          because of your judgments, O God.
⁹   For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth;
          you are exalted far above all gods.

¹⁰  The LORD loves those who hate evil;
          he guards the lives of his faithful;
          he rescues them from the hand of the wicked.
¹¹  Light dawns for the righteous,
          and joy for the upright in heart.
¹²  Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous,
          and give thanks to his holy name!

¹The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD and died. ²The LORD said to Moses:

Tell your brother Aaron not to come just at any time into the sanctuary inside the curtain before the mercy seat that is upon the ark, or he will die; for I appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat. ³Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. ⁴He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and shall have the linen undergarments next to his body, fasten the linen sash, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy vestments. He shall bathe his body in water, and then put them on. ⁵He shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

⁶Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. ⁷He shall take the two goats and set them before the LORD at the entrance of the tent of meeting; ⁸and Aaron shall cast lots on the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for Azazel. ⁹Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer it as a sin offering; ¹⁰But the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the LORD to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.

¹¹Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house; he shall slaughter the bull as a sin offering for himself. ¹²He shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of crushed sweet incense, and he shall bring it inside the curtain ¹³and put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the covenant, or he will die. ¹⁴He shall take some of the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle the blood with his finger seven times.

¹⁵He shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the curtain, and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat. ¹⁶Thus he shall make atonement for the sanctuary, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel, and because of their transgressions, all their sins; and so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which remains with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. ¹⁷No one shall be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the sanctuary until he comes out and has made atonement for himself and for his house and for all the assembly of Israel. ¹⁸Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement on its behalf, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and of the blood of the goat, and put it on each of the horns of the altar. ¹⁹He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and hallow it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel.

¹³But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. ¹⁴For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. ¹⁵For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. ¹⁶For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel's call and with the sound of God's trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. ¹⁷Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. ¹⁸Therefore encourage one another with these words.

¹"Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

²"So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. ³But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

⁵"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. ⁶But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

¹⁶"And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. ¹⁷But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, ¹⁸so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

¹   If it had not been the LORD who was on our side
          — let Israel now say —
²   if it had not been the LORD who was on our side,
          when our enemies attacked us,
³   then they would have swallowed us up alive,
          when their anger was kindled against us;
⁴   then the flood would have swept us away,
          the torrent would have gone over us;
⁵   then over us would have gone
          the raging waters.

⁶   Blessed be the LORD,
          who has not given us
          as prey to their teeth.
⁷   We have escaped like a bird
          from the snare of the fowlers;
     the snare is broken,
          and we have escaped.

⁸   Our help is in the name of the LORD,
          who made heaven and earth.

¹   Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory,
          for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.
²   Why should the nations say,
          “Where is their God?”

³   Our God is in the heavens;
          he does whatever he pleases.
⁴   Their idols are silver and gold,
          the work of human hands.
⁵   They have mouths, but do not speak;
          eyes, but do not see.
⁶   They have ears, but do not hear;
          noses, but do not smell.
⁷   They have hands, but do not feel;
          feet, but do not walk;
          they make no sound in their throats.
⁸   Those who make them are like them;
          so are all who trust in them.

⁹   O Israel, trust in the LORD!
          He is their help and their shield.
¹⁰  O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD!
          He is their help and their shield.
¹¹  You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD!
          He is their help and their shield.

¹²  The LORD has been mindful of us; he will bless us;
          he will bless the house of Israel;
          he will bless the house of Aaron;
¹³  he will bless those who fear the LORD,
          both small and great.

¹⁴  May the LORD give you increase,
          both you and your children.
¹⁵  May you be blessed by the LORD,
          who made heaven and earth.

¹⁶  The heavens are the Lord’s heavens,
          but the earth he has given to human beings.
¹⁷  The dead do not praise the LORD,
          nor do any that go down into silence.
¹⁸  But we will bless the LORD
          from this time on and forevermore.
