Administrative History
The Presbytery of Monmouth was organized in 1859. Its origins can be traced to the Presbytery of West Jersey, which was formed out of the Presbytery of Philadelphia. Ten years previously, a separate Presbytery of Burlington had been formed out of this West Jersey area. In 1859 a petition was presented to the Synod of New Jersey requesting that the eastern portion of the Presbytery of New Brunswick be designated as the Presbytery of Monmouth. Following the reunion of the Old and New School Presbyterians in 1870, Burlington and Monmouth Presbyteries were united, with the congregations of the former being absorbed by the latter.
Currently part of the Synod of the Northeast, Monmouth Presbytery includes 43 churches in an area encompassing Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, and parts of Middlesex and Mercer counties.
This collection reflects Monmouth Presbytery's administrative history and organization from 1819 to 1911. Included are correspondence files, annual reports, committee reports, minutes and resolutions. Also included are various ledgers, property and account books, historical sketches, dockets, cases and miscellaneous other papers.
The materials in the collection are arranged roughly in chronological order.
