Guide to the Clarence Shannon Long Papers
Open for research.
Clarence Long was born in West Brandywine Township, Pennsylvania, in 1878. He graduated from public high school with honors in 1895. From 1895 until 1905 he was employed in the National Union Bank of Reading. He continued his studies during this time under private tutorial.
In 1899 he married Laura Amelia Baker, a daughter of a United Evangelical minister. Mr. Long became active in the First United Evangelical Church of Reading and was called to the ministry in 1903. He was licensed to preach that same year, and from 1906-1910 he served as pastor at Grace United Evangelical Church of Philadelphia. He was ordained in 1909. Soon after, Clarence Long became Director of Religious Education in the Central North Broad Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia.
In 1912, Rev. Long served as acting pastor of John Chambers Memorial Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. He also served as assistant pastor of the Central North Broad Street Church and Calvary Presbyterian Church. In 1914, Long began a ministry at Old Pine Street Church that lasted forty-three years. In 1917 he was admitted to the Presbytery of Philadelphia from the East Pennsylvania Conference of the United Evangelical Church. He worked as assistant to Victor H. Lukens until 1922, when Rev. Lukens resigned and Rev. Long was installed as "stated supply." He served in this capacity until 1952, when he was installed as pastor of Old Pine Street by the Presbytery. He continued as pastor until his death in 1957.
This collection consists of correspondence, sermons, pastoral records, photographs, poems, prayers, and legal documents. The correspondence is both personal and professional in nature. The letters document many of the disputes Long had with parishioners (including John Wanamaker), as well as routine church matters and family situations. There are many letters from his uncle, James H. Long. The sermons are organized by number. Set II of the sermons is indexed according to subject, title, and date. There are no corresponding sermons for the Children's Sermons index. The pastoral records are mainly from Long's years at Grace United Evangelical Church of Philadelphia but also include marriage license stubs for later years. Also included are the records of his time teaching at the Deaconess House and Philadelphia School for Christian Workers.
