Lewis Seymour Mudge was born in Yonkers, NY on August 24, 1868. He graduated from Princeton University in 1889 and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1895. From his 1895 ordination until 1921, he served various pastorates in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In 1921 he was elected to the office of Stated Clerk of the General Assembly (PCUSA), a post he held until retirement in 1938. From then until his death in 1945 he was entitled Stated Clerk Emeritus of the General Assembly. In 1931 he was General Assembly Moderator.
The bulk of Record Group 5 consists of Mudge's correspondence dating from 1925-41. In addition, there are some biographical materials and speeches.
The correspondence is arranged in two sets: the first is alphabetical by person's name, the second is alphabetical by subject. Biographical materials and speeches are at the beginning of the collection.
Record Group 20 consists of Stated Clerk Mudge's correspondence on the subject of the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions, 1933-36.
