Four generations of the Hoge family were Presbyterian ministers, including Moses Hoge (1752-1820); his sons James (1784-1863), John Blair (1790-1826), and Samuel Davies Hoge (1791-1826); grandsons Moses Drury Hoge (1818-1899) and William James Hoge (1825-1864); and great-grandson Peyton Harrison Hoge (1858-1940).
The Hoge Family Papers consists of the correspondence and sermons of four generations of Presbyterian ministers and other family members from 1801 to 1903. The collection contains the letters of Moses Hoge, 1801-1820, documenting family affairs and the early days of Union Theological Seminary in Virginia; letters of James Hoge, 1801-1859, including letters to William Swan Plumer regarding Negro colonization; letters of John Blair Hoge, 1814-1816, related to his European travels; and correspondence and sermons of Samuel Davies Hoge. Other materials include letters and sermons of William James Hoge relating to his work at Brick Presbyterian Church, New York City, and letters to his wife regarding his Civil War experiences; correspondence of Moses Drury Hoge, including letters from Benjamin Mosby Smith, Robert Lewis Dabney, and William James Hoge; and notes and correspondence of Peyton Harrison Hoge, along with other papers related to his civic and ecumenical activities.
