Guide to the United Presbyterian Church of North America. Department of Church Erection and Board of Church Extension Records
Open for research.
In 1859 the United Presbyterian Church of North America (UPCNA) established the Board of Church Extension. With its headquarters in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, the Board was charged with aiding mission stations and congregations to obtain suitable houses of worship and parsonages. Assistance was given either as an absolute gift or in the form of a loan for a definite period of time.
The Board was incorporated in 1871, and in 1924 it merged with the Board of Church Erection to become the Department of Church Erection and Board of Church Extension, a holding body supervised by the Board of Home Missions. In 1958, the UPCNA and the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America (PCUSA) united to form the UPCUSA (United Presbyterian Church of the United States of America) and the work of church extension and erection was placed under the Board of National Missions of the UPCUSA.
Record Group 44 contains the financial records of the Department of Church Erection and Board of Church Extension of the UPCNA, 1869-1958. Although the bulk of the collection consists of post-1924 materials, some earlier items have been included.
