Dorothy May Taylor was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 13, 1908. She was graduated from Goucher College, Baltimore, Maryland (1929), and received a master's degree in education and mathematics from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland (1956). She taught mathematics in Baltimore's secondary schools from October 1929 to June 1949.
In June 1949, the Board of Foreign Missions, Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., appointed Dorothy Taylor to Japan. She arrived in Japan in August 1950 and began language study in Kyoto as well as teaching an English Bible class at Rakutoo Church in Kyoto. In the summer of 1951, she was transferred to Hokusei Gakuen, a junior-senior high school and junior college for girls, in Sapporo. For the next twenty-two years, she taught English and Bible classes, served on various school committees, and was an advisor to the Y.W.C.A. of the junior college.
Miss Taylor retired in 1973.
This collection includes a few 1950s Christmas letters and cards from Dorothy Taylor to Trinity Presbyterian Church, Berwyn, Pennsylvania, primarily describing holiday activities and events at Hokusei Gakuen, a private Christian girl's school in Sapporo, Japan. Included as well are annotated photographs (1952-1956) primarily documenting Hokusei Gakuen activities and events. A few annotated photographs (1950-1951) document Taylor's association with Rakutoo Church in Kyoto, Japan.
