Charles Watson was born in Cairo, the son of Presbyterian missionaries Margaret and Andrew Watson. He attended Princeton University and Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1902 he married Maria Elizabeth Powell.
Watson served as pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church of St. Louis between 1900 and 1902. In 1902 he was appointed Corresponding Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions (UPCNA), a post he retained until 1916.
Watson is notable for being founder and president of the American University at Cairo, the library of which bears his name.
This collection consists of two letter books kept by Watson between 1891 and 1913; one other letter written in 1910; and a circular letter with pamphlets and publicity materials about American University.
The letter books were donated to the Presbyterian Historical Society by W.A. McGill.
