Guide to the Elmer Lincoln Mattox Papers
Open for research.
Elmer L. Mattox was born in Winterset, IA. He graduated from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1893. Upon graduation, he and his bride, Emma King Mattox, sailed for China under the auspices of the Board of Foreign Missions. Mattox joined the faculty of Hangchow Christian College. He served as its president and vice-president between 1913 and 1930. He retired from missionary service in 1934 and returned to the United States.
This collection includes official correspondence with members of the Hangchow Christian College faculty and fellow clergymen, photographs and publications. The publications are nearly all historical sketches of Hangchow Christian College, a subject to which Mattox returned many times over the years. In addition to the photographs in Series 4, there are programs in Series 5 that also contain photographic images.
