Guide to the General Assembly Moderators' Photographs and Autographs Collection
Open for research.
In 1904, the Presbyterian Historical Society acquired the A.A.E. Taylor collection of photographs and autograph letters of General Assembly moderators. The collection began with John Witherspoon, moderator of the first General Assembly in 1789, and ended with the moderator of the 1884 Assembly. The Society assembled the likenesses (many are prints and engravings rather than photographs) and autographs into three scrapbooks, and added to the collection annually, beginning a fourth book in 1949 and eventually bringing the collection up to 1958. The researcher should be aware that the collection is not complete.
For purposes of conservation, the scrapbooks have been disassembled. The pages have been removed from the bindings and stored in flat boxes. The original chronological order has been maintained.
