Mary Helen Black was born in Darlington, Indiana in 1894. She graduated from Grove City College in 1915 and then taught elementary school for three years prior to her appointment to the PCUSA's Punjab Mission in India in 1918. Until her retirement in 1958, she taught and in 1926 served as principal of the Christian Girls' School in Dehra Dunn.
This collection consists of Mary Helen Black's eleven diaries and limited reports and correspondence to the Board of Foreign Missions, 1920-1970. The diaries, which cover the years 1920, 1922, 1925 and 1926-1970, briefly record her daily activities at the Punjab Mission. Those after 1958 reflect her retirement years. The reports and correspondence to the Board of Foreign Missions describe her activities at Dehra Dunn.
