Guide to the William Harvey Papers
Open for research.
William Harvey was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1835 and emigrated to America in 1850. He graduated from Westminster College in 1862 and then went on to Allegheny (Pittsburgh) Seminary. After his ordination in 1865, William Harvey married the daughter of Judge Thomas Lee before being appointed to the Egypt Mission by the UPCNA. He arrived in Egypt later in 1865, served first in Medinet el Faiyum and then Simnures. At Simnures, with his wife, he started a school for boys and a school for girls, where he stayed until 1875. After a long furlough the Harveys returned to Egypt and served in Cairo until William's death in 1908. During his years of service, William Harvey worked frequently with other missionaries such as John Hogg and Andrew Watson.
The collection consists of ten diaries which cover William Harvey's years of service in the Egypt Mission. The diaries are highly descriptive of his day to day activities and also provide some commentary on events which affected his life. There is also a typed manuscript about his wife by an unknown author.
