The Commission on the Reorganization of General Assembly Agencies was established by the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. to implement the report of the Special Committee on Restructuring the General Assembly Agencies that was adopted by the 183rd General Assembly (UPCUSA) in 1971. The Commission, comprised of eleven members, was instructed to "have as its central concern in implementation, the worldwide mission of the Church." It was authorized to supplement the Special Committee's report as necessary to execute its provisions, to reconcile conflicting provisions therein, and to furnish interpretations thereof, as was required. The Commission was also charged with making recommendations to the General Assembly concerning the Form of Government. The Commission, whose final report was adopted by the 184th General Assembly in 1972, was discharged by the 185th General Assembly in 1973.
Record group 179 consists of an alphabetically arranged subject file comprised of the Commission's working papers, minutes, reports, correspondence and miscellaneous items, circa 1960-1973 (bulk 1971-1973). Various earlier materials relating to the Special Committee on Restructuring the General Assembly Agencies are also included. Items dealing with synod reorganization, the relocation of the national offices and various councils on women, theological seminaries and missions also constitute this collection.
