Henry Van Vleck Rankin was born in 1825. He graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1847 and was appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions as a missionary to China in 1848. He and his wife Mary Greenleaf Rankin served at Ningpo, the first permanent Presbyterian station in China. He died in service at Tengchow in 1863.
Record Group 176 documents Henry and Mary Rankin's years of missionary service in China. Mary Rankin's correspondence is chiefly addressed to her parents and sisters, and vividly describes her life in China. Mr. Rankin's papers include correspondence, diaries and miscellaneous items. Their son Henry William Rankin was a historian; his papers consist largely of notes and articles, many dealing with the history of mission work in Japan and China. A favorite subject was Divie Bethune McCartee.
