Guide to the Jewel Huelster Schwab Papers
Open for research.
Jewel Huelster Schwab and her husband George W. Schwab were appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions to the West Africa Mission in 1905. The nature of their work initially was educational, industrial, and evangelistic. From 1905-1920, they served in Libreville, Elat, Metet, and Batanga in French West Africa. In 1920 they were assigned by the BFM to explore the entire Basa field, and from 1921 until their retirement in 1941 they served in Sakbayeme after the Basa field was taken over by the Board. During their service in Africa they wrote extensively of their experiences, including a monograph on the hinterland tribes of Liberia and several Bulu language texts. Mrs. Schwab, in addition to her teaching and evangelistic responsiblities, performed medical work and wrote, edited, published, and translated many articles about Bulu life and culture.
Record Group 164 consists of Jewel Schwab's papers, 1914-1953. Includes Schwab's correspondence to/from the Board of Foreign Missions, 1914-1938: personal correspondence, 1914-1943; and diverse reports on Liberian geography and culture, notably her observations on Liberian women.
