The Foreign Missions Conference of North America was a voluntary cooperative association of the foreign mission boards of the United States and Canada. The Conference provided "the boards with a medium for consultation with other boards working in the same fields or lines of work; for cooperation in planning and united action when needed; for the administration of joint projects when boards desire this service; for cooperation with other nationwide interdenominational organizations in the United States; and for cooperation with twenty-five similar groups in other lands which, with the Foreign Missions Conference, constitute the International Missionary Council."
In 1893 a Conference of Foreign Missionary Boards in the United States and Canada met in New York. The group continued to meet annually and in 1911 adopted a constitution and the name, Foreign Missions Conference of North America.
The Conference held annual meetings of representatives of its constituent boards "to confer on issues, determine policies, detect overlapping, and initiate advance projects." Between meetings the Conference was governed by a Committee of Reference and Counsel which was incorporated in 1917. The activities of the Conference were primarily carried out through area representative committees and functional representative committees. The former were concerned with geographic areas; the latter with matters such as literacy, Christian literature, rural missions, and medical missions. There were also a number of standing, special, and inter-agency committees. The area representative committees included Africa, China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Near East, Southeast Asia, and the Committee on Cooperation in Latin America. The functional representative committees included the Associated Mission Medical Office; the Christian Medical Council for Overseas Work; Christian Religious Education; Radio, Visual Education, and Mass Communication; Rural Missions Cooperating Committee; Treasurers Committee; and the Committee on World Literacy and Christian Literature. The standing committees included Arrangements for the Annual Meeting, English-Speaking Union Churches Overseas, Executive, Executive Staff, Finance and Headquarters, Interchange of Christian Leadership, Missionary Personnel, Nominating, Public Relations, Research, and Special Program and Funds.
In 1950 the Foreign Missions Conference of North America joined the National Council of Churches where its activities were assumed by the Division of Foreign Missions.
The Foreign Missions Conference of North America, 1887-1951, files date primarily from 1920 to 1950. The papers represent the combined files of Wynn C. Fairfield, executive secretary, 1946-1950; Sue E. Weddell, secretary, 1944-1950; Emory Ross, general secretary, 1940-1945; Fennell P. Turner, secretary, 1919-1928; and Florence G. Tyler, secretary, 1935-1940. (Tyler was also secretary of the Federation of Woman's Boards of Foreign Missions of North America.) It should be noted that the materials found within this record group are almost entirely administrative files. It appears that the majority of the Conference's archives were deposited over a period of years with the Missionary Research Library at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
The files are arranged alphabetically by subject, name of organization, name of individual, and geographic location. Items within the files are arranged chronologically by year, month, and day. Partially dated documents are placed at the end of the month or year; undated items are placed at the end of all dated material. Enclosures are placed after their letter of transmittal. Newspaper clippings, unless enclosed with correspondence, are placed at the end of subject files.
The files consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, minutes, reports, constitutions, articles of incorporation, press releases, budgets, financial statements, surveys, questionnaires, programs, biographies, pamphlets, leaflets, and newspaper clippings.
The files contain documents relating to a number of area, functional, and standing committees of the Conference. These include the China Committee, Far East Committee, Interchange of Christian Leadership, Japan Committee, India Committee, Missionary Personnel Committee, and the Special Program and Funds Committee. The files concern a variety of subjects such as the Board of Missionary Preparation, communism, the International Missionary Council, immigration, passports, postwar planning, radio broadcasting, religious liberty, slavery, women in the ministry, and World Day of Prayer.
Included in this record group are the files of the Federation of Woman's Boards of Foreign Missions of North America. This organization was formed in 1915 "to afford Christian women of America an opportunity to do cooperative work in foreign mission fields." In 1933 the Federation merged with the Foreign Missions Conference. The files consist primarily of minutes and agenda, but also include correspondence, reports, financial statements, and printed matter. Also found here are materials relating to the World's Missionary Committee of Christian Women, a group founded in 1888. These papers of Abbie B. Child, secretary of the Committee, consist of correspondence, minutes, programs, pamphlets, and receipts.
There are a number of files relating to union churches located overseas. These files, arranged by country and city, consist of correspondence, reports, constitutions, deeds, financial statements, bulletins, and pamphlets.
The researcher is also referred to the files of NCC Record Group 8, Division of Overseas Ministries for further material concerning the Foreign Missions Conference.

The archives of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America were processed in 1980-1984 through two grants awarded to the Presbyterian Historical Society by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Work under the first grant was performed by Dr. Alan Thomson and under the second grant by Donald L. Haggerty.
The archives of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America have been dated from 1950 to 1972; however, there is material dating from before and after this time period. Documents from the predecessor organizations date from as early as 1839. There is also a small amount of material found in the files from as late as 1975. The year 1972 was selected as a cutoff date for the archives because of the major reorganization which the NCC underwent at this time. The archives are arranged in the following record groups:
