Guide to the Alexander Mackie Papers
Open for research.
Dr. Alexander Mackie was born in Philadelphia on September 26, 1885. He attended Princeton University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1907 and a Master of Arts degree in 1909. The following year, he graduated from the Princeton Theological Seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. Dr. Mackie was ordained in 1910 and became the pastor of Sherwood Presbyterian Church, Sharon Hill, that same year. In 1935, he was elected President of the Presbyterian Ministers' Fund. As the senior member of that body, he guaranteed the sustenance and security for succeeding generations of ministers and their families. On the Board of Trustees at Temple University, he committed himself to the task of establishing some form or forms of religious and theological teaching, long an aspiration of Russell Conwell. Mackie succeeded in creating the Conwell School of Theology and also assisted in upgrading the academic program of Temple University's religious department. As president of the Friends of Old Pine Street, he helped found and promote the necessary financial support for the building of the Presbyterian Historical Society. On January 20, 1966, Dr. Mackie died at Miami Beach, Florida.
