Ralph Waldo Lloyd, born October 6, 1892, in Friendsville, Tennessee, was the son of Henry Baldwin Lloyd and Maud Idora Jones Lloyd. As a child, Ralph Waldo Lloyd split his time between his native Tennessee and the Uinta Indian Reservation in northeastern Utah, where his father was assigned as a physician for the U.S. Indian Service. After high school, Lloyd remained in Tennessee to attend Maryville College, where he converted from Quakerism to Presbyterianism.
Upon his graduation in 1915, he was hired by Westminster College, in Salt Lake City, Utah, as an instructor in science and mathematics and an athletic coach. There, he met Margaret Bell, the daughter of a Presbyterian minister, who was the college’s Dean of Women and French and German teacher. The couple married in 1917. During World War I, Lloyd served with the U.S. Army in Europe, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Field Artillery.
After the war, Lloyd returned to Westminster College, where he served for a year as assistant to the President before leaving to work for a manufacturing firm in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1921, Lloyd entered McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago on the Bernadine Orme Smith Fellowship. He was ordained in 1923 by the Union (Tennessee) Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and graduated from McCormick with a Bachelor of Divinity degree the following year. Lloyd served as pastor to the First Presbyterian Church in Murphysboro, Illinois, from 1924 to 1926, and was then called to the Edgewood Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he served until 1930.
In November of 1930, Lloyd received a call to assume the presidency of Maryville College. He became the college’s sixth president and remained there until his retirement in 1961. Lloyd led the school through an economic depression, two wars, the tensions of the Cold War, and notably, the school’s re-integration in 1954.
Lloyd’s life was characterized by service to the Presbyterian Church and the Christian faith. In addition to his long tenure as President of Maryville College, he took on administrative and leadership roles for numerous Church agencies and organizations, locally, nationally, and internationally. These roles included Chairman of the Permanent Commission on Interchurch Relations of the PCUSA, 1941-1958, focusing on church cooperation and union; Moderator of the 166th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., 1954-1955, during which he advocated for the ordination of women by the denomination; member of the General Committee of the World Council of Churches from 1951 to 1961; and North American Secretary (1951-1959) and President (1959-1964) of the World Presbyterian Alliance/World Alliance of Reformed Churches.
Following Lloyd’s retirement from the presidency of Maryville College, the Lloyds moved to Bradenton, Florida. Lloyd continued to be centrally involved with the World Presbyterian Alliance, and in 1961 and 1962, he made a Presidential World Visitation to Presbyterian churches across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India, Australia, Asia, and Hawaii. He also maintained an active role in ecumenical projects, participating in consultations in Africa and Latin America, commenting upon the official and confidential Delegated Observers' reports on the Second Vatican Council, and attending World Council of Churches assemblies. Lloyd kept in touch with Church affairs throughout his later years. During his retirement years he had the time to write two historical works, Maryville College—A History of 150 Years (Maryville, Tennessee, 1969) and Westminster United Presbyterian Church—A History of 50 Years (Bradenton, Florida, 1974); and a family history, Our Children’s Lloyd Ancestors (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1992), co-written by his grandson Mark Frazier Lloyd. Researchers interested in further biographical information about Ralph Waldo Lloyd and his family may wish to consult the family history.

This is a collection of personal papers of Ralph Waldo Lloyd, documenting his work as President of Maryville College and his service to the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., the World Presbyterian Alliance, and the World Council of Churches. The correspondence, sermons, manuscripts, reports, publications, clippings, and other materials in this collection illustrate Lloyd’s dedication to Christian higher education, foreign mission, and ecumenism.
The collection consists of six series: Biographical, personal, publications, and writings, 1915-2001; Maryville College, 1928-1965; Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., 1944-1985; Church unification, 1938-1956; World Presbyterian Alliance/World Alliance of Reformed Churches, 1941-1983; and Ecumenical organizations, 1947-1964.
The Biographical, personal, publications, and writings series consists of seven subseries: Biographical materials, 1915-1986, 1993, 2001; Correspondence, 1916-1986; Writings, addresses, and sermons, 1922-1986; Journals, 1928-1930; Westminster Presbyterian Church (Bradenton, Fla.), 1968-1985; Expense accounts, 1963-1964; and Photographs, 1946-1985. Biographical materials include clippings about Lloyd’s professional life, and four unpublished biographical documents prepared by Mark Frazier Lloyd, which supplement Ralph Waldo Lloyd’s family history, Our Children’s Lloyd Ancestors. Selected correspondence documents some of the significant transitions in Lloyd’s career. The bulk of the first series consists of Lloyd’s publications, addresses, and sermons, organized chronologically. Publications include typescripts and published articles in magazines such as Presbyterian Life, Christian Century, and Monday Morning. Sermons and addresses include Lloyd’s speeches to students at Maryville, talks before various academic and civic audiences, and clerical messages to congregations, some of which were broadcast over the radio. A partial index of sermons, listing titles, dates, and locations delivered, is included in the collection. This series also includes travel journals from Lloyd’s visits to Palestine and Europe in 1928 and 1930; a copy of Lloyd’s 1974 published history of the church, and his notes for Beacon Sunday School classes he taught between 1968 and 1985. The Photographs subseries contains images collated from several places throughout the collection. Cross-references are provided in the collection inventory, as well as in relevant folders.
The Maryville College series contains a selection of records documenting Lloyd’s three decades as President of the college. The series includes correspondence about his appointment to the post in 1930 and his retirement in 1961; lecture notes for courses on Christian belief; alumni bulletins, 1946-1958; correspondence, memoranda, and clippings about the re-integration of Maryville College in 1954; correspondence, clippings, and publications about integration of public schools and higher education institutions; and a number of Lloyd's publications concerning Christian higher education. Additional speeches and publications on this topic may be found in Series I, in the Writings, addresses, and sermons subseries.
The Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. series consists of two subseries: Moderator, 166th General Assembly, 1954-1956, 1983; and Other PCUSA activities, 1944-1965. The Moderator files include correspondence and other documentation of Lloyd’s nomination for and election to the post; speeches, correspondence, clippings from the 166th and 167th General Assemblies in 1954 and 1955; itineraries and clippings from his travels around the nation as Moderator; and articles and correspondence about Presbyterian reunion in 1983. Files in the Other PCUSA activities series document Lloyd’s participation in the Board of Foreign Missions’ China Deputation in 1947; his efforts on behalf of the ordination of women by the denomination; and his part in the organization of the Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations (COEMAR) in 1958.
The papers in the Church unification series document Lloyd’s dedication to the unification of the major branches of the Presbyterian Church, which began in 1938 with his appointment, by the 1938 General Assembly of the PCUSA, as a member of the Department of Church Cooperation and Union. In 1952, Lloyd prepared a fact paper on the Plan for Presbyterian Union, which proposed the unification of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S., and the United Presbyterian Church of North America, forming what was to be called the Presbyterian Church of the United States. The 1958 unification included only the PCUSA and the UPCNA, but Lloyd did live to see the PCUS unify with the UPCUSA in 1983.
The World Presbyterian Alliance/World Alliance of Reformed Churches series consists of five subseries: Correspondence, 1949-1983; Alliance papers, 1941-1965, 1982; Presidential World Visitation, 1954, 1960-1963; Vatican Council II, 1962-1965; and Consultation on World Confessionalism, 1963. This work was one of the focal points of Lloyd’s professional life, and it is well represented in this collection. The records include Executive Committee and North American Area Council minutes and reports, and documentation of the travels that Lloyd took on behalf of the World Presbyterian Alliance, notably his year-long Presidential Visitation to churches across the globe. The Presidential Visitation included talks with church and civic groups, theological institutions, and government officials, elected and royalty alike. Mrs. Lloyd accompanied her husband, meeting with Churchwomen's groups, schools, and humanitarian agencies.
The Ecumenical organizations series consists of two subseries: World Council of Churches, 1947-1963; and International Congregational Council, 1961-1964. Lloyd was closely involved in the World Council of Churches from its inception, defining another focal point of his work in interfaith cooperation. He also served on its Central Committee. Included here are his notes on the first assemblies of the World Council of Churches. Finally, one folder relates to a meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Congregational Council, in Uppsala in 1964.
