Guide to the Herrick Family Papers
Open for research.
Hubert Pierre Herrick was born in McDonough, New York on December 6, 1827. After graduating from Amherst College in 1849, he attended Auburn Theological Seminary and received his B.D. in 1853. Later in the year Hubert was ordained and married Julia Bushnell of Granville, Ohio. In November 1853, the newly married couple embarked from New York for the Gaboon Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. The Herricks served as missionaries to the Nengenenge outpost of the Gaboon Mission until the middle of 1855 when both had failures of health and were forced to return to the United States. In August 1857, Hubert returned to the Gaboon Mission, without Julia, who was still convalescing. Several months later, on December 20, 1857, Hubert Herrick died in the field at Nengenenge, West Africa of a fever.
The papers consist of letters written by Hubert P. Herrick and Julia Bushnell Herrick to each other and family members. The strength of the collection lies in its portrayal of the missionaries' separation from loved ones while being stationed in Nengenenge, West Africa.
