David Irving was born in Scotland. He graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1846 and later that year sailed for Futtehgurh in northern India to work under the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions. He and his family returned to the United States in 1849. Irving served as pastor of churches in New York and New Jersey until he was appointed Corresponding Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions in 1865. He served in this post until his death in 1885.
