Guide to the Esther Belle Hanna Papers
Open for research.
Esther McMillan was born in Canonsburg, PA. In 1852, she married Joseph A. Hanna, a Presbyterian minister. A month after their marriage, they embarked for Oregon, traveling by steamer as far as St. Joseph and then overland to Marysville (later Corvallis), Oregon. The Hannas established the Presbyterian Church of Corvallis, only the second Presbyterian congregation organized in Oregon.
Record Group 384 consists of the journal Esther Hanna kept en route to Oregon. The journal is a typed copy of the original manuscript, which is in the collection of the State College of Washington. The last few pages include typed copies of newspaper articles relating to the Hannas and to the early Presbyterian missions in Oregon.
The original manuscript can be found in the collection of the State College of Washington.
