Grace Visher was born in Chicago. She studied at the University of South Dakota, and in 1912 married Jo Denny Payne. In 1922 the Paynes applied to the Board of Foreign Missions and were assigned to the East Persia Mission. Between 1922 and her retirement from service in 1956, Payne worked as an evangelical and medical missionary with women and children in Teheran.
