Guide to the Mildred Orr Tanner Papers
Open for research.
Mildred Orr was born in Valley, NE in 1894. She attended San Jose Normal School in California and began her teaching career in 1917. By 1921 she had become a vice-principal in an elementary school in Arroyo Grande, CA. In 1927 she married Chester Tanner. They settled in Morro Bay, CA.
Tanner's involvement with Christian Endeavor began when she was twenty. She attended the 1914 Christian Endeavor convention in California and was offered the post of 10th Legion Super-intendent. She led the Junior Christian Endeavor program in her church in Morro Bay.
Mildred Tanner's papers include a xerox copy of her autobiography, which is rich in details of growing up in prewar America and of early schoolteaching days. The collection also includes four scrapbooks, one relating to Morro Bay Church's Christian Endeavor program and the other three relating to the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions. Missionary Archie Crouch served the Morro Bay church as pastor before he went into service in China, and two of the scrapbooks are filled with pieces he wrote about his experiences in China.
