Guide to the Thomas T. Alexander Papers
Open for research.
Thomas Alexander was born in Mount Horeb, TN. He attended Maryville College and Union Theological Seminary, graduating in 1877. In May of that year he married Emma Brown and in November, having been appointed by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, they sailed for Japan. Their years of service were divided between Osaka (evangelistic work) and Tokyo (educational work). In 1899 the family returned to the United States for a furlough; Emma Alexander remained at home with their six children while Thomas Alexander returned to Japan. He died in 1902.
This collection consists of a copy of a journal which Alexander kept between 1877 and 1900. It begins with reminiscences about his early years, and it includes notes added by his son in 1901. The original journal remains in the Alexander family. The family has retained copyright and any researcher wishing to use the journal for publication must contact the family for permission.
The collection also includes a few letters and notes written by other missionaries which give information about Alexander's memorial service.
