William Marshall was born in Fifeshire, Scotland. He was licensed in 1763 by Perth Presbytery (Associate Presbyterian Church) and sent as a missionary to Philadelphia. He was ordained by the Associate Presbytery of Pennsylvania in 1765.
Marshall served as pastor of the church at Deep Run in Bucks County until 1769, at which time he was called to the Associate congregation in Philadelphia. He remained pastor of this congregation, known as the Scots Presbyterian Church, until his death.
In 1782 the Associate Presbytery of Pennsylvania voted to unite with the Reformed Presbytery. Marshall and others protested the merger, appealed to the Synod in Scotland, and continued the Associate Presbytery. Marshall served as stated clerk of the presbytery. He holds the distinction of being the first moderator of the Synod of the Associate Reformed Church (afterwards the UPCNA).
This collection consists of correspondence and five bound volumes of sermons and sermon notes.
