Samuel Miller was born in Delaware in 1769. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1789 and in 1791 he was licensed by Lewes Presbytery. In 1793 he was called to the United Presbyterian Churches of New York. In 1806 He was elected Moderator of the General Assembly. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Princeton Theological Seminary, and in 1813 he became its Chairman of Ecclesiastical History and Church Government. In 1849, due to age and ill health, he resigned the chair. He died the following year.
His son, Samuel Miller Jr, was born in Princeton in 1816. He graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1833. After spending a few years as tutor and lawyer, he was ordained by the Presbytery of New Brunswick. He served several congregations in New Jersey, and in 1864 he was elected a Director of Princeton Seminary. He was elected moderator of the New Jersey Synod in 1879. He died in 1883.
