Biographical Note
Edward Doane was born in New York City. He graduated from Union Theological Seminary (NY) in 1852 and was ordained by the Third Presbytery of New York. He traveled to Ascension Island as a missionary in 1853. In 1875 he traveled to Japan, where he spent two years before returning briefly to the United States. In 1880 he sailed again for Ascension Island. He died in Honolulu.
This collection consists of one letter, written by Doane from Ascension Island in 1855. He discusses conditions on Ascension Island with members of his home presbytery.
