Guide to the Abram Woodruff Halsey Papers

Abram Woodruff Halsey was born in Elizabeth, NJ. After working in business for a few years, he matriculated at Princeton University, from which he graduated in 1879. He then spent three years at Princeton Seminary and was ordained in 1882. He was called to the Spring Street Presbyterian Church in New York City, where he remained as pastor until 1899. At that time he accepted the post of Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions (PCUSA).
Dr Halsey served the BFM for 22 years. He was the first Board secretary to visit the West Africa mission field (1907), and later he made similar visits to Mexico. He is notable for his advocacy of the cause of missions to Africa and India. He died in 1921.
Record Group 330 includes biographical and memorial materials on Dr Halsey; three photograph and postcard albums of his trip to West Africa; and a number of his writings, lectures and sermons.
