Guide to the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Office of Institutional Chaplains Records
Open for research.
In 1950 the General Assembly made the Board of National Missions responsible for the development of a program to further the ministries in hospitals, prisons and other institutions. A part-time and limited work was carried on by an Institutional Ministry Committee until the Office of Institutional Chaplaincy was created in 1956 to coordinate the work of all Presbyterians serving as institutional chaplains. The Office assisted in setting regulations and standards for chaplaincy work and in the enlistment and training of new chaplains. A scholarship fund was established to aid ministers and seminary students to receive training for chaplaincy work. The Office prepared literature to assist parish ministers in hospital ministry.
In the reorganization of 1972 the responsibility for institutional chaplaincy was assigned to the Program Agency (PA). After the merger of 1983 the function was given to the Social Justice and Peacemaking Ministry Unit (SJP).
The collection consists of correspondence between institutional chaplains and the Office of Institutional Chaplains and the Office of Health and Welfare, applications of chaplains for scholarships for clinical pastoral training, applications for classification and accreditation, and annual reports of chaplains. There are records related to professional organizations and concerning chaplain training programs, scholarships and regulations and standards for institutional chaplaincy.
