Guide to the Archibald Alexander Papers
Open for research.
Archibald Alexander was born near Lexington, VA. He was ordained in 1794 and installed pastor of Brierly Church. In 1796 he became president of Hampden-Sydney College. In 1807 he accepted a call to Pine Street Church (now known as Old Pine) in Philadelphia. Later that year he was elected Moderator of the General Assembly. In 1812 he became president of the newly established theological seminary at Princeton. He died at Princeton in 1851.
This collection consists of outgoing correspondence, manuscript articles, and notes from lectures given at Princeton. It also includes an autographed postcard portrait of Alexander and a likeness of him in the final years of his life.
SERIES I: OUTGOING CORRESPONDENCE, 1819-1851
SERIES II: MANUSCRIPT ARTICLES, 1851, UNDATED
SERIES III: LECTURE NOTES, 1826, 1840, UNDATED
The lecture notes in Folder 9 are from lectures given by Alexander and Samuel Miller. As only a few of them are labeled accordingly, it was not possible to separate Miller's lectures from Alexander's. Presumably one student who took both their courses kept his notes together.
