Guide to the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. General Assembly Committee on Segregated Synods and Presbyteries Records
Open for research.
At the request of the General Assembly of 1954 the Moderator appointed a committee to work in consultation the Stated Clerk to confer with synods and presbyteries organized along racial and cultural lines concerning their integration into synods and presbyteries in the same geographical area. In 1962 the General Assembly reorganized the committee and charged it with the task of presenting a report to the next Assembly with recommendations as to how the middle judicatories could be brought into conformity with the pronouncements of the General Assembly concerning segregation.
These records consist of the committee secretaries' files of correspondence, minutes and reports dealing with the merging of segregated synods and presbyteries and regular synods and presbyteries. The segregated synods and presbyteries were African American and Native American governing bodies and the old German-speaking Synod of the West. The secretaries of the committee were C. Morton Hanna and Robert C. Lamar. There is correspondence of Eugene Carson Blake and William P. Thompson, Stated Clerks.
