She obtained a B.A. in 1918 at Wooster College and later in 1944 obtained an M.A. in Social Studies at the University of Chicago. In 1920 Miriam McGaw was appointed to the PCUSA's North India Mission as the Head Mistress of the Mary Wanamaker School in Allahabad. She also taught classes at Forman Christian College. They remained until 1958. The Benades returned to India in 1964 and continued their educational work for three more years.
Miriam Benade also chaired the Social Welfare Committee of the local executive of the All India Women's Conference and All Pakistan Women's Association. She published a series of articles on education and the history of India. The Benades returned to India, in 1964, and for three more years they resumed their educational work.
The papers largely consist of photographs which document Miriam Benade's educational work in India.
