Guide to the Walsh Family Papers
John Johnston Walsh was born in Newburgh, NY in 1820. He graduated from Union College in 1839 and continued his education at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1840-1843. He was ordained in 1843 and was appointed by the PCUSA to the North India Mission in the same year. Walsh was stationed with his wife, Emma first at Fategargh, then Mainpuri and finally Allahabad. In 1873 they left India and Walsh worked as a pastor in Millertown, NY until 1876 when they retired to Armenia, NY.
The diary covers their trip to and around India in their first year. The bulk of the diary is written by Emma and contains long descriptive entries of their experiences and impressions of India, missionaries and the British colonial government.
