The Presbyterian Historical Society, founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1857, is the oldest denominational historical society in the country. Its mission, specified in its constitution, is "to collect and preserve materials and promote the knowledge of the history of the Presbyterian Church." The Second Presbyterian Church of Charleston, SC, was the location of the first meeting of the Society's founders; they decided to establish its headquarters in Philadelphia, home of the first presbytery in America.
In 1925 the General Assembly (PCUSA) established a Department of History as an integral part of the Office of the General Assembly. An agreement coordinated the activities of the Department of History and the Historical Society, and the Church took possession of the Society's collections. The Secretary of the Historical Society is at the same time the manager of the Department, and is directly responsible to the Stated Clerk of the OGA. The Historical Society is a voluntary support organization for the Department.
The Historical Society began by accepting all donations relating to the history of Presbyterianism in the United States; newspaper clippings, engravings, individual manuscript letters, sermons and museum artifacts. As the nineteenth century gave place to the twentieth and professional training in library science and archival management became standard, the collection policies gradually changed to reflect a new emphasis on official records of the PCUSA board and agencies, and personal papers of prominent Presbyterians. A records management program began during the 1970s. The Society includes a library, an archives, and a microfilming operation.
The Presbyterian Historical Society of the Synod of Texas was organized in 1902. The General Assembly (PCUS) designated the Texas PHS as its official historical organization in 1926, moved its collection to Montreat, NC, and renamed it the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches. In 1983, when the UPCUSA and PCUS reunited to form the PC(USA), it was decided that the historical organizations should merge to reflect this unity. Philadelphia remained the headquarters of the new Office of History/Presbyterian Historical Association, with Montreat as a regional office. In 1990, the name was changed back to Department of History. The collection policies of the two offices continue to reflect Montreat's emphasis on records of the PCUS and Philadelphia's concentration on those of the PC(USA) and its predecessor denominations.
Record Group 22 includes correspondence, minutes, reports, notebooks, scrapbooks, and photographs which detail the history of the Presbyterian Historical Society/Department of History from its founding in 1852 until 1991. The earliest records are of particular interest.

For records of the Historical Foundation/Montreat office from 1902-1988, researchers should contact the Department in Montreat. This collection includes the records of both offices from the 1988 merger on.
Between 1901 and 1930, annual reports were printed in the Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society rather than published separately. Annual reports from 1926-1930 are printed in the minutes of the General Assembly under the name of Department of Historical Research and Conservation, and from 1931 on under the name Department of History. Researchers are encouraged to consult these resources, as there are gaps in Series 2 of this collection.
A collection of PHS/Department of History Annual Reports and minutes is available on microfilm, and copies of all publications of the Presbyterian Historical Society are available in the library.
Though the names "Presbyterian Historical Society" and "Department of History" are designations of
two different entities, as is explained above, the Society's name (or the abbreviation PHS) is generally understood to include the Department as well (after 1923 and unless specifically indicated to mean only the Society). This usage is apparent throughout the finding aid.
