Guide to the Isaac Snowden Papers
Open for research.
Isaac Snowden, Jr., was a Philadelphia merchant and a dedicated churchman. He was treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA) from 1799 until his death and of the Presbytery of Philadelphia. Snowden was also an active member and officer of the Second Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, serving as secretary of its Board of Trustees from 1802, as its pew agent, and on the Congregational School Committee. In l8l8 he was ordained an elder. He also served as secretary or treasurer of some of the voluntary societies of Philadelphia, including the Evangelical Society, the Missionary Society, the Humane Society, and the Magdelan Society.
The collection consists of outgoing correspondence, diaries (journals) of Snowden, subscription lists and accounts for Princeton Theological Seminary and estate papers of William Falconer, a deacon of Second Presbyterian Church who gave property to the Trustees of the General Assembly for the seminary. The diaries document Snowden's religious experience, church attendance, and especially the substance and delivery of sermons, funeral orations and lectures which he heard.
Researchers should consult the library card catalogue for related materials. Record Group 33, The Second Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, reflects Snowden's work in that church.
Part of this record group was formerly catalogued in the library and the remainder was with materials from Second Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia.
