Guide to the Mabell Sammons Hayes Papers

Mabell Sammons Hayes, a medical missionary of the PCUSA, graduated from Grove City College in 1919 and from Woman's Medical College in 1923. Appointed to the India Mission in 1924, Dr. Hayes served at the Fatehgarh Hospital from 1925-1927. From 1927 through 1960, she served as a physician on the staff of the Allahabad Agricultural Institute where her husband, Brewster Hayes, was head of the Institute's Horticulture Department. In 1960, she was sent to the Punjab Synod where she served on the staff of the Ludhiana Christian Medical School until 1962. She was enrolled as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1965 through 1967 and served with the Department of Social and Preventative Medicine, SMS, Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan. From 1967 until her return to the U.S. in 1970 she served in Naila, a village in the Jaipur District, where she conducted general clinic work and lectured at the Health Center.
This collection primarily documents Dr. Hayes' years of service in India, 1924-1981. Her papers consist of diaries, correspondence, photos and photo albums that reflect her medical career in India as a medical missionary of the PCUSA, a Peace Corps volunteer and as a private citizen.

Includes home letters to members of her family, 1936-1928, 1937-1970; annual and semi-annual letters,1926-1965. Arranged chronologically by year.
SERIES III: Photographs and photo albums, 1925-1969
Includes photos of the annual meeting of the North India Mission, 1925-1945 and 8 photo albums covering the period from 1930-1969. Arranged chronologically.
SERIES IV: Miscellany, 1924-1978
Includes autobiographical notes and memoirs of Dr. Hayes; certificates and awards; unpublished manuscripts; personal labor reports, 1938-1954 and other items. Arranged alphabetically.
